Simone, the daughter of legendary jazz singer Nina Simone, brings both her lineage and her mother's songs to the Bay Area for a single performance with the Napa Valley Symphony on Saturday, May 9.
"Tribute of Love" includes carefully chosen nuggets from Nina's long discography, sung in her daughter's own distinctive style. Available on Simone's latest release, "Simone on Simone," this is an opportunity to experience fresh new takes on a royal and timeless repertoire, complete with big band arrangements.
As the daughter of one of the most influential, beloved, bewildering and bewitching musicians and vocalists ever to grace a stage, Simone is a singer, songwriter and performer whose abilities in transcending genres echo the traditions of her mother. Combining a rich vocal range with an innate skill for lyrical interpretation, Simone's resume includes starring roles on Broadway in such acclaimed musicals as "Rent" and Elton John's "Aida."
The 2008 release of her first full–length album, "Simone On Simone" (a big band tribute to her mother, produced by famed jazz musician and arranger Bob Belden), allowed music lovers worldwide to discover what live audiences have witnessed for over a decade. "This tribute to my mother," says Simone, "is a chance for me to do those songs I love the most in the way that I hear them; a glimpse of my life over four decades."
The performance begins at 8 pm at the Lincoln Theater, 100 California Drive, in Yountville. For tickets or more information, call 707.226.8742 or visit the Napa Valley Symphony website.
