Jazz bassist and bandleader Marcus Shelby joins forces with his all-star Jazz Orchestra, vocalist Faye Carol, and the Pacific Boychoir Academy for a series Bay Area performances that celebrate the roots of jazz and spirituals on April 24-25, 2009.
The two concerts — at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, and the First Congregational Church in Berkeley — mark an unprecedented collaboration between a leading jazz orchestra and a leading boys' choir. And, from what we've already heard, the music in rehearsal is breathtaking!
Both shows area fundraising events for PBA and the choir's upcoming tour of South Africa this summer as part of South Africa's National Arts Festival.
The concerts will feature selections of Shelby's inspiring oratorio "Harriet Tubman," along wit never-before heard arrangements of "On a Turquoise Cloud," "Come Sunday," and other choral arrangements by Christopher Kula. The concerts echo the heritage of the great Duke Ellington, who premiered his first "Sacred Concerts" at Grace Cathedral back in 1965.
"This collaboration is an unprecedented experience as the PBA and MSJO join forces to celebrate the joy of jazz... This special collection of artists will perform some of Ellington’s classics celebrating the 110th anniversary of his birth," said Kevin Fox, Musical Director of PBA, in a recent press release.
"The excitement of singing with Marcus Shelby and singing Duke Ellington classics makes this one of the very special moments of my life," added Fox. "I hope that classical and jazz lovers in the Bay Area will share this very special series of concerts."
So do we. Showtimes are 7 pm for the concert at Grace Cathedral (1100 California Street, San Francisco) on Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25 at the First Congregational Church (2345 Channing Way, Berkeley).
