For the first time in 22 years, longtime Bay Area jazz critic Jerry Karp returns to the airwaves with his own radio program, broadcasting every other Thursday from 10 am to noon. The program began on New Year's Day.
"Jazz from the Wharf" is being broadcast over KZYX, a small public radio station in Boonville (actually Philo), near the new Anderson Valley digs that Karp is now calling home after more than two decades of city life in San Francisco.
The show is available live online at www.kzyx.org.
Karp — no stranger to the airwaves — worked at the NPR radio affiliate in New Orleans for many years during the 1980s as a jazz/blues/classical producer. Other than a brief guest appearance on KCSM's Desert Island Jazz show a few years back, this is his first radio gig since 1986.
Welcome back to the wonderful world of radio, Jerry. A wall of music behind you, and two speakers pointed at your head (and our ears)... it just doesn't get any better!
