The Big Band era meets the Bard with "In the Mood," a swinging adaptation of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing," featuring Big Band standards from the 1940's.
"In the Mood," conceived by Patrick Watkins and adapted by John Fitzgerald, makes its West Coast premiere on June 5.
The story for this musical adventure is set in a captured Italian Villa during the height of World War II as Leonora (Elly Lichenstein) — a tough-minded entertainer — runs a wartime USO retreat with her daughter Hero (Marjorie Rose Taylor) and a delightfully talented troupe of big band singers and dancers. Other performers include Tyler Costin as Claudio, Danielle Cain as Beatrice and Tim Kniffin as Benedick.
Romance, comedy and intrigue ensue when a group of GI's return for a weekend of RR. It's war all right — war between the sexes, that is — in this musical featuring favorite tunes from the Big Band era, including "In the Mood," "For All We Know," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "More Than You Know," "The Nearness of You," "Our Love is Here to Stay," "Come Rain or Come Shine," and "I'll Be Seeing You."
"In the Mood" runs from June 5 through June 28, 2009, at the 6th Street Playhouse, 52 West 6th Street, in Santa Rosa's historic Railroad Square, with performances at 8 pm Thursday through Saturday, and matinees at 2 pm Saturday and Sunday.
