Pianist Keith Jarrett brings his storied trio to
the Nob Hill Masonic Center on Saturday, March 8
|
The
San Francisco Jazz Festival celebrates its ninth
popular Spring Series March 6 through June 20 with more
than 40 concerts, featuring a stunning line-up of
international and national jazz masters, along with
artists representing the cutting edge in jazz.
Among
the venerable jazz masters performing at this year's
spring series are pianists Keith Jarrett with his
storied trio (Gary Peacock, bass, and Jack
DeJohnette, drums), McCoy Tyner (appearing with
tap dance phenom Savion Glover), Brad Mehldau,
Chick Corea (in a trio format with DeJohnette and
vocalist Bobby McFerrin), and Joe Sample;
saxophonists Wayne Shorter, Lee Konitz, James
Moody, David Sanchez and Charles Lloyd;
and acclaimed jazz singers Dianne Reeves and Ernestine
Anderson.
On
the fresher side of the street, look for performances by
keyboardist and composer Hiromi; Travis Sullivan's Björkestra;
2 Foot Yard; the Bad Plus; Iron & the Albatross; and
the Nashville-based Cherryholmes bluegrass
"family band."
The
international jazz scene is represented in the ninth
annual spring series with concerts featuring Israeli
ensemble Third World Love and pianist Yaron
Herman; Portuguese "fado" vocalist Ana
Moura; Cape Verdean vocal sensation Lura; Latin jazz pianists Chano Dominguez and
Pablo Ziegler;
Brazilian singers Lenine and Rosa Passos; and Edward Simon and the Ensemble Venezuela, Aquiles Baez
Ensemble, and the VNote Ensemble.
Rounding
out this spring's performance series are a handful of
popular festival favorites: singer/pianist Patricia
Barber, jazz violinist Regina Carter, San
Francisco pianist Denny Zeitlin, and blues
singer/pianist Mose Allison.
Special
performances this year include a three-film series (Buster
Keaton's classic "Sherlock, Jr.," along with
German Expressionist classics "The Cabinet of Dr.
Caligari" and Nosferatu") at the Castro Theatre,
with live music from Club Foot Orchestra; a
two-night "Sacred Space" concert featuring
cellist Lynn Harrell performing Bach's 6-part
"Cello Suites"; and a "Delta Blues
Summit" featuring Taj Mahal and Keb' Mo'
that concludes the Spring season on June 20.
