Bay Area photographer James Knox will be exhibiting his color and black and white photographs from his series "Jazz Moments" at the Berkeley Public Library in downtown Berkeley, from February 14 through April 30.

Knox's photographs capture exceptional moments from live performances of contemporary jazz artists in the Bay Area.

Knox was inspired to photograph and write about the San Francisco Bay Area jazz scene after attending the Monterey Jazz Festival for the first time in 2002. His photographs have been featured in the SF Chronicle, The Wall Street Journal Weekend Edition, and album covers and for local and national jazz musicians.

James has photographed the Monterey Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ, the Vallejo Jazz Festival, The Jazzschool in Berkeley, Yoshi's Jazz Club, the Berkeley Jazz Festival, Jazz at Pearl's, the San Jose Jazz Festival, the Malcolm X Jazz Arts Festival, the Fillmore Jazz Festival, the Art and Soul Oakland Festival, the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, Anna's Jazz Island, Jazz on the River/Russian River Jazz Festival and countless music concerts. He also enjoys photographing nature, architecture, food, classic cars, and neon signage.

His jazz photography has been exhibited at the San Francisco Main Public Library (2007), The Jazzschool in Berkeley (2008), Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San Jose (2010) for Jazz Appreciation Month, and the San Leandro Public Library (2010.) Knox's writing has been featured online on Jazz Review and Blogcritics.

His images have also appeared in the JazzWest Photo Galleries over the past few years.

In 2010, James received second place and merit awards for his photo submissions in the Oakland Convention and Visitor's Bureau Destination Oakland Photo Contest.

James will discuss his work during a free artist's reception on Saturday afternoon, February 26, at 2 pm in the first floor Catalog of the Central Library.

Access to the exhibit is available during the library's open hours: Monday 12 to 8 pm; Tuesday 10 am to 8 pm; Wednesday through Saturday, 10 am to 6; and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm.

The Berkeley Public Library is located at 2090 Kittredge (at Shattuck) in downtown Berkeley, and the exhibit — sponsored by the Friends of the Library — is wheelchair accessible. For more information, call 510.981.6100 or visit www.berkeleypubliclibrary.org
