The
Healdsburg Jazz Festival transforms the lovely town
in the heart of Sonoma's Wine Country into a mecca for
jazz: an idyllic experience
that draws many Healdsburg alumni back for every year for
10 days of world-class jazz.
This year's festival features a stellar
array of talent representing international reach of jazz,
ranging from headliners Esperanza Spaulding, the Julian
Lage Group, Randy Weston's African Rhythms Quartet,
John Handy, the James Moody Quartet with
vocalist Marlena Shaw, and a special solo piano
performance by Denny Zeitlin.
The
11th
annual Healdsburg Jazz Festival lineup also includes
lots of local talent, including the Benny Barth Trio,
the Greg Hester Piano Trio, Eddie Marshall,
the Billy Higgins Legacy Band, the Montclair
Women's Big Band, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel
Choir, Yancie Taylor and his Jazztet, and many
more.
Since long-time jazz presenter
Jessica
Felix launched the event in 1999, the Healdsburg Jazz
Festival has defied economic downturns and music industry
hard times by focusing exclusively on musical talent
rather than glitz.
This season is the most ambitious yet.
"Every year we try to make the jazz festival better,
but this will definitely be our biggest and best
yet," says Felix, the Festival's founder and artistic
director.
