The 14th
annual Jazz on Fourth Street Festival, presented by the Fourth Street Merchants and KCSM/Jazz 91, will take place Sunday, May 17, from noon to 5 pm along Fourth Street between Hearst and Virginia
streets in Berkeley.
The free outdoor music festival, benefiting the jazz programs at Berkeley High School, features the long-time Director of the Berkeley High Jazz program,
Charles Hamilton, with an Alumni Band featuring many Berkeley High School
grads, including Josh Jones (drums), Michael Aaberg
(piano), Ben Ball (alto saxophone), Miles Perkins
(bass), and Joshi Marshall (tenor saxophone). Mark Wright
(trumpet) and
Moshe Milon (percussion) round out the band.
Also performing
are Johnny Nitro & The Doorslammers, as well as Tito Y Su Son de
Cuba, plus two Berkeley High School Combos and
a grand finale with the award-winning Berkeley High Jazz
Ensemble.
During the Festival, a raffle will be held to benefit the Berkeley High School jazz programs. Raffle prizes are donated by Fourth Street merchants, including the Grand Prize of a $1,000 gift certificate at Pave Fine Jewelry on Fourth Street.
The Berkeley High Jazz Program, once home to Joshua
Redman, Ambrose Akinmusire, Peter
Apfelbaum, Michael Wolff, Benny Green and many others, is a national model of instrumental education. Proceeds from this event will help the school continue
its acclaimed jazz programs and send the ensemble to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland this summer. Jazz On Fourth Street has collected over $117,000 for the music program since the
Festival's inception.
