Jessica Felix, the founder and creative
director of the Healdsburg
Jazz Festival, has been re-instated as the organization's leader... and the board that fired her has resigned.
In August, the five-member board for the non-profit
festival decided to oust Felix and put the annual summer festival on hold for a year. Outpourings of support for Felix from artists
and the local community persuaded the board to reverse its unpopular decision and reinstate Felix.
According to a news report in the San Francisco
Chronicle (and posted to SFGate.com), Felix and her lawyer received a letter from the board advising her that she was put back in
charge, and that the entire board was submitting its resignation.
Felix founded the wine country jazz festival 12 years
ago. In years past, she's presented such recognizable jazz musicians as Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell and McCoy Tyner
alongside a slew of local Bay Area jazz musicians and ensembles. The festival, which has suffered financial challenges in recent
years, is a popular event in the Northern California area.
The festival website
was inundated with complaints about Felix's ouster and a near-unanimous call to bring her back to the festival she established a
dozen years ago.
No announcement has been made yet regarding the status
of the 2011 festival.
